Lean
Manufacturing means identifying and eliminating waste wherever it can
be found. There are many tools that can aid in identifying and eliminating
waste. The following graphic shows some of our favorites.

Examples of lean in action at
Metcam include:
-
High density part hanging on
our conveyor driven paint line. This not only increases throughput
and capacity, it decreases paint cost (less paint hits the filters) and
improves quality (less potential for variability in titrations and
temperatures).
-
Synchronizing work cells.
Scheduling in a job shop environment is critically important to support
synchronized part flow wherever and whenever possible. Without
careful planning and scheduling, WIP will accumulate and eventually chaos
will occur. By dividing our equipment into cells and sub-cells, we
are better able to schedule and synchronize our production.
-
Pull systems and consigned
materials. Together these techniques allow us to make only what we
need when we need it and pay for only what is required when it is
required.
Lean does not stop on the shop
floor. Many other areas of operation from document control and
estimating to EDI and work flow automation are affected by lean principles
at Metcam.
Identify the waste and
eliminate it, wherever it is!
