Enclosure programs fail in the field when finish systems are chosen for the conference-room sample instead of the install site. This whitepaper walks through a decision framework Metcam uses with OEM and infrastructure customers specifying powder coating, plating, pad printing, and silk screening.
Map the environment first: indoor conditioned, indoor industrial, outdoor-adjacent, or coastal. Then map the assembly sequence — will fasteners, gaskets, or electronics be installed after coating? Masking and selective finishing decisions belong in the quote package, not as a surprise on the packing list.
Powder remains the workhorse for many cabinet and racking programs because it delivers durable film build and color consistency. Plating and other services still have a place for grounding paths, wear surfaces, or corrosion strategies that powder alone cannot cover. Mixing systems on one assembly is fine when the interfaces are intentional.
Marking methods should survive handling and cleaning solvents used in the field. Pad printing and silk screening each have strengths; the right choice depends on substrate, color count, and whether the legend is safety-critical.
