Target has begun installing Step ‘n Wash in its more than 1,800 U.S. stores as part of the retailer’s heightened customer safety response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Manufactured by Metcam, the product is the first and only self-retracting step that enables children to safely reach the sink and soap dispensers to wash hands properly in public restrooms.
“With COVID-19, suddenly everyone has become aware of the importance of washing hands, and now businesses understand that their customers have an expectation that they are doing everything possible to ensure the health of their customers,” said Joi Sumpton, Inventor/President of Step ‘n Wash, who came up with the idea after constantly struggling to lift her children up against the sink to wash their hands.
A certified women-owned business, Step ‘n Wash has worked with Metcam for 10 years, expanding from small production runs of 25 units now up to thousands. The 2018 Georgia Manufacturer of the Year manufactures, assembles and ships the product, giving Sumpton and her team many advantages including the unique ability to focus all their efforts on sales and marketing.
“During our long partnership, the engineering support Metcam has provided to find greater efficiencies in design and production has been invaluable, helping Step ‘n Wash today be more durable than ever with reduced overall production costs,” Sumpton said. “In 10 years, we’ve never had a customer call us to say there was a problem with assembly or that something was missing.”
